being leveled against harmon- wright's mother. she was hit with three counts relating to forge i in attempts to cover up her son's personnel file within the police department. >> there were personnel file documents that involved aspects of his employment as a police officer for which she now stands indicted as having forged or allerred in an attempt to purge that negative information. >> reporter: sullivan was employed as an administrative secretary to the chief of police at the time her son was hired as an officer. do you have any comments as to what happened? anything at all you would like to say? >> reporter: culpeper police officers who were at the announcement dodged our questions and headed for the door. harmon-wright is currently being held at the fauquier adult detention center. he has a bond hearing scheduled for june 8. today is day 8 for the jury in the john edwards corruption

trial. if there is no decision by the end of the week, legal experts say that would probably mean there's an indication there's some dissension among the jurors. edwards is accused of using about a million dollars in campaign money to help hide his hen pregnant mistress. this was during the 2008 presidential campaign. in campaign 2012, mitt romney begins a new phase of his campaign for the presidency today. after yesterday's win in the texas primary, he has enough delegates for the g.o.p. nomination. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: mitt romney campaigned in the swing state of nevada while the texas voters held him enough delegates to become the g.o.p.'s nomination for president. in a statement romney said he's honored and humbled adding we will settle for nothing less than getting america back on the path to full employment and prosperity. the former massachusetts governor will now spend the summer before the republican convention raising money and trying to convince voters

president obama doesn't deserve a second term. >> we need to have presidents who understand how this economy works day to day, small business, middle size business, fake business. i do, i want to use that experience to get us to work again. >> reporter: but romney is also dealing with controversy. real estate tycoon donald trump keep questioning president obama's birth certificate even though most people accept he was born in hawaii. supporters put out an internet video criticizing romney for not distancing himself from trump. it shows john mccain defending the president's citizen subpoena during the 2008 campaign. >> i have read about him. >> no, ma'am. >> reporter: and the obama campaign issued a statement saying romney lacks the backbone to stand up to trump because, quote, he's so concerned about lining his campaign pockets. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> president obama didn't campaign tuesday and he has no campaign events scheduled

today. syria's most senior diplomat in washington was told to pack up and get out of the united states. the order comes from the obama administration in protest of last week's massacre in syria. 108 people killed, most of them execution style, plenty of them children. the united nations says entire families were gunned down in their homes. more than half a dozen countries have expressed their outrage by doing the same, expelling syrian diplomats. tomorrow family, friends and the general public will be at washington convention center to pay their final respects to the godfather of go go. >> tuesday's viewing at the howard theatre was cut short because of last night's severe weather but this was the scene yesterday as thousands lined up to say goodbye. brown died nearly two weeks ago from pneumonia. he was 75. people didn't seem to have a problem braving the heat and the long line to say goodbye. >> it's just amazing. it just speaks to how much of

virginia. that's because one pilot in that crash worked for the faa. the other was with the national transportation safety board. the small planes collided monday over caulk year county. the ntsb pie -- fauquier county. the ntsb pilot and his passenger were killed. >> we could tell whoever was in that probably did not survive. >> i'll never forget that sight. >> especially on memorial day. >> the pilot in the other plane was hurd but he is recovering. -- hurt but he is recovering. the canada transportation agency is investigating how debris fell from a troubled airliner and whether it slammed into the ground it damaged vehicles all across southern ontario. the air canada flight took off from toronto headed for tokyo. this is monday afternoon. on the ground below, police say chunks of debris fell in several places near the airport, including a gas station parking lot. some windshields were smashed but luckily no people were

hurt. >> i came back pretty shocked to see this obviously. yeah, just really, really strange, not something i expected to happen today having airplane debris on my windshield. >> i was surprised when i heard a noise. i got scared. i didn't really expect it. i didn't know what was that noise. good thing nothing happened, only the cars. >> air canada confirms the debris came from a boeing 777 engine which had been shut down after takeoff. the plane returned back to the airport, landed without incident and was just fine. at least 17 people are dead and hundreds are injured after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked northern italy. buildings throughout that region collapsed due to the force of the powerful quake. rescue crews are now combing through debris still looking for the possibility of any survivors. and this is the second quake to

hit this little region in more than a week. now more than 14,000 people are without a home. a metro mechanic remains in the hospital this morning after he was struck and pinned under a train. it happened yesterday afternoon at a metrorail yard near the shade crow grove station. he -- shady grove station. he was trapped for more than an hour. a surgical rescue team was brought in to free him. they are reviewing safety procedures at the shady grove yard. john paul stevens, john gwen and more were all in the same room yesterday from all walks of life. they received the medal of freedom from president obama yesterday. one celebrity after another came up to be presented with their prestigious medal. 13 people in all got it at yesterday's ceremony. >> just on a personal note, i had a chance to see everybody in the back. what's wonderful about these events for me is so many of

these people are my heroes individually. i know how they impacted my life. >> the medal is given to those who make extraordinary contributions to world peace, national interests, security and culture. defense secretary leon panetta delivered the commencement speech at the u.s. naval academy on tuesday. he said the navy and marine corps will play a crucial role in confronting aggression and defeating opponents. he also said the focus for the next generation will be on building u.s. maritime strength across the asia pacific region. almost 1100 men and women graduated from the naval academy during yesterday's commencement. time now 4:38. still ahead this morning, a health alert to give you something to think about before you order sushi for lunch today. we'll introduce you to a couple that would be a shoo-in for the double mint gum commercials. >> first, howard has your weather first coming up next.

weekend. the dow added 1% only its fifth day up. worries about your financial problems are shaping global investors in asia and europe and it remains to be seen if the fears come back to wall street this morning. the dow stands at 12,581, added 126 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was up by 33 and the s&p 500 was better by almost 15 points. worries about europe are giving drivers a little relief at the gas pump. crude prices fell another 2% yesterday. they closed at $91 a barrel. gas prices have dropped about 30 cent as gallon since -- cents a gallon since early april. the national average $3.64 a gallon. some experts say it could fall as low as $3.50 but don't expect two bucks any time soon. the news keeps getting worse for greece. a new report warns if greece leaves the euro, greece could lose more than half of their annual income. the report comes from the national bank of greece.

it also predicts unemployment would jump from 22% where it is right now to 34%. greece will hold new elections next month. some experts say if antiausterity parties win, greece will leave the euro. that will not be good for anyone, including the united states. >> wow, that domino effect is not good at all. >> the new president of france was swept in on the antiausterity platform. >> there is growing enthusiasm, hope that the greeks will go ahead and elect a government that's pro-austerity measures and there's a lot of pressure being put on them from european allies. >> thanks, jess. 4:43. howard has the forecast and monika has the traffic next. >> plus a sneak peek at the newest gaming parlor about to open in maryland. we'll be right back.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 4:46 on this wednesday morning. working on the computer last night? the whole house went into darkness. thank goodness for the generator. it came back on. but the thunder and lightning incredible. >> an impressive line of storms. a lot more severe weather with inch hail west and northwest of town. but we certainly had the power outages, trees down. thankfully this morning much quieter. can't guarantee you won't run into a sprinkle or two over the next our or two or three. not as hot. we'll stay in the 80s. here's your bus stop forecast. hard to believe it's two weeks from today i think my son's done. many folks will be running around. isolated showers this morning. lows in the 60s and low 70s starting out here. sun is up at about 5:40, 5:45. we are going to look at some sunshine today. by the middle of the day, we'll have sun and clouds mixed

together, about 80 for lunch time. as we head toward 5 p.m. low 80s. any time between 3:00 and 7:00 west to east, the front will come through with an isolated shower or thunderstorm. but it shouldn't be nearly as widespread as what we had yesterday afternoon and evening when that line of storms came through. things are a lot weaker this morning. we still have a few showers. you can see them north and west of town. as we switch it over to live doppler 9000hd, we have the showers even back to i-81 down toward harrisonburg. a little leftier than that and -- leftier than that -- heftier than that and down to the south. northern calvert, the heavier stop is west of spotsylvania. look at this cell moving basically east to southeast between ashland and newland. our friends at the northern neck and st. mary's county, you're going to be seeing heavier showers. the rest of us should be fairly light on our showers for the

morning. your temperatures have dropped into the low 60s in winchester and hagerstown. even 50s in cumberland. we're holding on to 71 in fredricksburg, pax river. easton is 70. here in washington this morning with cloudy skies and a few sprinkles good visibility. we've got 72 degrees. very muggy morning with the humidity at 87%. and the winds currently northwesterly at 6. they'll flip around back to the south before the front pushes through late this afternoon. when the front does come through, it's much drier air back here. michigan and illinois andeanian. that's the -- and indiana. that's the air mass we'll have tomorrow. tomorrow is going to be spectacular. still dealing with the remnants of beryl. as it gets close to the coast, it could pick up some strength. not surprised to see it upgraded again to a tropical storm later today, tonight and tomorrow. for us as we look at future cast, the morning showers, they get out of here pretty quickly except for the northern neck here. by noon richmond could still be looking at some showers. look at this line of showers by mid afternoon which kicks in

with the front coming through here 5:00, 6:00 p.m. right through the metro. the isolated showers. heavier storms in the north end of beryl, maybe up toward virginia beach. that will pull out to sea and we end up with a beautiful air mass moving in for thursday. as we look at the forecast, today about 84. showers leave this morning. isolated this afternoon. gorgeous thursday, around 80. more showers and storms returning friday afternoon and evening. the nats are back in town friday. that may be a problem for that but saturday looks good at 78. could be an isolated shower sunday afternoon 80. a couple of showers here and there early next week. 4:40 now. let's go to monika with time saver traffic. >> a smile on the face. that's because things are looking good all around town. good morning, everybody. beltway is clear. no problems to report coming in from the north on 95 or the bw parkway out of baltimore. we're looking good on the beltway itself leaving the 95 interchange and heading over toward silver spring and bethesda. let's take a live look outside. here's what it looks like route 50 at rou boulevard.

toxins, pollutants make their way into the food web and ultimately we are the end consumer. so it will affect us. >> pacific bluefin tuna spawns off the coast of japan before swimming east to the california coast. bluefin tuna is primarily for sushi. the newest and largest casino in maryland will be open to the public. when it does you can take your chances on one of 4700 slot machines at the new place called maryland live. >> my luck wouldn't be good on any of them. the new gambling and entertainment complex at anne arundel mills mall opened its doors for a sneak peek on tuesday. our scott broom got to take a look inside. >> reporter: opening night is now set for june 6. it is a megacasino. when it's open, it will be the nation's third largest. with maryland -- when maryland voters approved expanded gambling in 2008, few imagined it would mean a megacasino.
